We’re back with more installments in the Belle Point Prose Series! Prose #3 features two short pieces—one fiction, one memoir—by Jane V. Blunschi. Prose #4 is a previously unpublished story by Cassie E. Brown that shares the same world of her story, “Thawing,” in our Mid/South Anthology. Check them out in our shop and learn more below!
#3: “San Miguel” and “Call the Carmelites” by Jane V. Blunschi
(Mexico and Louisiana) In these pieces, the speaker recounts unusual experiences with the divine in the midst of grief, addiction, and a hope for something more.
Jane V. Blunschi holds an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Arkansas. She was a 2014 Lambda Literary Emerging Voices fellow, and her collection of stories, Understand Me, Sugar, was published in 2017 by Yellow Flag Press. Jane’s Pushcart Prize-nominated work has appeared in Paper Darts, SmokeLong Quarterly, and Foglifter, among others. Originally from Louisiana, Jane lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
#4: “Picking Blackberries” by Cassie E. Brown
(Missouri Ozarks) A young girl provides testimony for a complicated family case.
Cassie E. Brown is a writer of long- and short-form fiction and essays. Her work draws inspiration from her childhood in rural Missouri, classic children’s literature, and her experiences as a queer misfit. Cassie’s work explores what is ugly, beautiful, and true about rural places and fairy tales. Apart from writing, she is a clinical social worker and a tea aficionado.
