Bio: Arkansas native, Melissa M. Frye, reflects on life experiences to craft realistic fiction and poetry. Her writing career began with nonfiction in the form of book reviews for AOL and subsequently a weekly movie review column in a local newspaper. She has won multiple awards for poetry and short stories. When not writing, Melissa collects weird facts and useless information. For example, she knows why the giraffe’s tongue is black.
Is there anything else you’d like us to know about your work that will appear in the anthology?
“Revelation in White Rock National Forest” is an amalgamation of many excursions to White Rock. It has always been a place of solace and each time I visit I learn something new about myself. I’ve seen it awash in bright sunlight, cast in dusky shadows, and bathed in soft moonlight. White Rock National Forest is the epitome of Northwest Arkansas.
How does the Mid-South and/or larger Southern region influence your perspective (personally and/or in your writing)?
There is a distinct culture in the South that doesn’t exactly translate to other regions. This culture shaped me as a human being. Some find it charming. Some find it offensive. I believe my work reflects the life and characteristics of the Southern region.
What do you wish more people knew about this area?
I wish people realized that the area is more varied than the stereotypes that represent it. Visit the Mid-South and let it surprise you.
