A quick announcement: our next workshop has just gone live!
Numbers for Writers: A Publishing Shop Talk
Led by Casie Dodd
Tuesday, October 3, 7:00-8:00 pm Central Time
Via Zoom
As people who tend to be preoccupied with words, writers don't always love to think about the numbers side of publishing: royalties, book sales, and the many other financial aspects that shape a new book's journey into the world. While information is out there, it's often fraught with anecdotal evidence and misunderstandings, especially if your primary source is social media. This candid and information-driven talk will discuss these practical realities of the industry and equip writers with more perspective to make the best choices for their own careers. Questions and discussion welcome!
Topics will include:
Operating costs of running a small press
Breaking down percentages of a cover price (royalties, wholesale discounts, print costs, etc.)
The value of context (especially when it comes to advances and royalties)
Realities of distributor-publisher relationships (fees and other logistical challenges that can impact a book's numbers)
How many book sales it takes to recoup costs (and maybe even turn a profit)
How to make informed financial decisions as a writer and a publisher
How to best support independent presses (and the authors we all love!)
Other details:
Participants will receive Zoom info at the end of September
Registration includes a Belle Point chapbook of your choice (please specify in the order notes--each copy will also count toward author royalties)
Up to 3 fee waivers are available; reach out to us at orders@bellepointpress.com for more information--no questions asked.
I hope you’ll join me to talk about some of the more pragmatic aspects of publishing that often go overlooked or misunderstood. I look forward to our conversation!
Paid Substack subscribers will also receive a discount code for the talk in this month’s post: coming soon!
