There’s a passage in the Walker Percy novel, The Last Gentleman, that has stayed with me for over a decade:
“For until this moment he had lived in a state of possibility, not knowing what sort of a man he was or what he must do, and supposing therefore that he must be all men and do everything. But after this morning’s incident his life took a turn in a particular direction. Thereafter he came to see that he was not destined to do everything but only one or two things. Lucky is the man who does not secretly believe that every possibility is open to him.”
In many ways, that has informed our values as a family and as creative professionals. It is not a small thing to commit to things, to places and people that have claimed us. I am grateful to have found (and stuck to) those “one or two things” that have always sought me.
In practical terms, this applies to how our approach to social media and other virtual platforms continues to evolve. Moving forward, here is how we plan to utilize various outlets and how you can best connect with our work (our accounts are linked in-text):
Substack: We are increasingly motivated to build up this space as a supplement to our main website. While regular posts are always publicly available, subscribing (free or paid) is the easiest way to keep up with everything we’re up to. On the free/public side, we’ll be sharing weekly newsletters and ongoing interviews with a variety of writers and industry professionals, while our paid subscribers will get exclusive access to monthly posts with writing resources and discounts on our self-guided courses. I (Casie) also try to stay engaged on Notes when I can.
Instagram and Facebook: The same posts go to these platforms on a daily basis M-F. We like using Instagram to connect with independent bookstores and other publishers as well. Though we aren’t very active on our actual Facebook page, you can follow us there to make it easier to share our posts with your friends and family. We do try to share posts on Facebook when we see them.
Twitter/X, Bluesky, and Threads: We are stepping back from regular posts of our own in these spaces and will likely just drop in to share major news. We will also re-post other accounts that tag us in their posts, so you can be an ambassador on our behalf on those platforms.
TikTok: We had an account—then we deleted it. Video just doesn’t appeal right now, but if that changes, we’ll let you know.
In short, Substack and Instagram are the best places to engage with us moving forward (for now); we feel these platforms are the best uses of our energies at this point in the social media landscape.
As a two-member team running the press from our household alongside various other obligations, our hours are often stretched to their limits. By shifting our focus toward the spaces that seem most conducive to connecting with our readers and growing our community, we hope this will make our communication more consistent and help us continue to be more intentional in building this work.
Stick around with us and follow what’s next.
